About Us:
From Our Artist, Grace M. Callanan:" I can remember crocheting with my mother back in 1924. She taught me a few basic stitches called the chain, the single crochet and the double crochet. After that, I read in books and learned many other techniques. I like to make practical things. Over the years I have crocheted doilies, tablecloths, afghans, bedspreads, wall hangings, lace, booties, potholders, automobile steering wheel covers, purse handles, baby sweaters, baby blankets, infants clothes, dolls, clowns, and even stuffed dogs. My daughter says I am a National Treasure in that I am an accomplished artist in crochet, but the only national recognition I received was in the National Crochet Contest. After placing first in the Michigan State Fair, my work went on to New York City to be judged with the best of all the state fairs. My lace won 4th prize in the National Crochet competition and I was the only Michigander to place in the finals."
"Practical things are more important to me than exotic patterns or designs. The kitchen offers an opportunity to create dish cloths, potholders, refrigerator magnets, table cloths, dish towels, and others. My double-sided crocheted potholder has been a real workhorse in the kitchen, holding up for me since 1957, or 43 years of wear. This is the same design I use today. My mother told me "waste not, want not", so I have learned to use all kinds of yarns and fabrics. This is how I learned to created the multicolored designs in my potholders."
In 2000 we decided to market Grace's creations via the Internet and established "Grace's Kitchen Crafts". The business manager and website designer is Kathleen Callanan, a retired electrical engineer. Grace can be contacted at : grace@callanan.org. We appreciate your business and thank you for visiting the site.
